Its very frustrating and I hope Apple will all make us happy sometime soon.

I am confused after reading all the posts over the past month or so...is the 1.25 GHz dual G4 going to be actually that slow? What is it as slow as...a 1.7 Ghz Celeron...or worse...a 66MHz PowerMac 6100?

I believe there will be an iphone, but I doubt it will be a smartphone right out of the gate.
Not to be too skeptical, but look at how long and how much R&D goes into current smartphones (especially qwerty ones). There were leaks for MONTHS before the E62, TMobile Dash, Blackberry Pearl, Treo 700p/W/750v/680, HTC StrTrK, etc all came out, because these things don't happen in a total vacuum...all that testing, it's hard to keep tongues from wagging and secret cameras from snapping. And people are certainly on the lookout, so it's not like Apple would fly under the radar.

Yes but you do not need to use it as a physical button.
You can use the MacBook 100% without EVER clicking the physical button.
The trackpad can be setup in System Preferences to respond to a touch as a click rather than a physical click. That is the way I have used it from days one and I have no issues with it at all.

Yeah, but it's important to some of us to have that physical click, which is why I love the trackpad. I can get a tactile response from anywhere on it. That's also necessary for a phone or iPod for me, and I'm sure it's true for thousands of other users.

    Even better.

    He's been put-down, for a while.

Looks to me like another example of "shock and awe".

    Must be the season.

no, he doesn't. and thankfully it should mean that he'll have no chance of getting anywhere near being President.

I didn't know who he was before I googled his name. Thought he was the model for Ken, from the Barbie range. (When he was younger) he looks like plastic.

I'm sure this is the first of many companies to ignore the massive PowerPC userbase out there. I wish there was something like a reverse-rosetta.

So much for the age-old tradition of Macs having a much longer useful service life than a Windows PC, now a 2-month old PowerMac is already becoming obsolete.

Right now I have a 24" white iMac with a 2.33 Ghz C2D and a 15" MacBook Pro with a 2.53 Ghz C2D. Both computers are great and work perfectly for what I do. The only problem is having two computers is overkill for me. Transferring files and apps is just too much of a hassle. What I'd like to do is get one of the new 13" MacBook Pros and get an external display to hook up when I'm using it at my desk. I just have a few questions. But first, let me tell you what I use my computer for: I do some web design and development, using CSSEdit, Espresso, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Illustrator, Photoshop. I do some RAW photo editing using Aperture and Photoshop. I do a lot of casual web surfing, emailing, etc. I watch videos on Hulu. I'll be going to school in the fall for computer science, so I'll be doing some (or a lot) of...whatever it is they have me doing. I do absolutely no gaming. So, here are my questions:

    Let's see...

Most successful desktop operating system: Microsoft Windows.
Most successful server operating system: Microsoft Windows Server.
Most successful office suite: Microsoft Office.

Three good reasons (and there would be more like Exchange Server, Sharepoint Portal, SQL Server, Visual Studio) to also have confidence in the man if he were hired as a product manager.

Like it or not, Microsoft still is the most IMPORTANT software company around, and they don't hire incompetent idiots either.

Winni.... you are right... they do not hire idiots. Well... maybe some... one in particular comes to mind. :)

Microsoft may have the most successful OS and other things, but they are living on their past and lack vision from the top. MS is quickly making themselves less relevant in the market place. Without better vision, they may become the Kodak of software.

How selfish and arrogant of Obama to say he'll veto any further extensions. The House already passed a 1 week extension yesterday. And now we're facing a shutdown because Obama wants to stamp his feet like a whiny child.

These greedy left-wingers refusing to cut the fat out of the budget are going to force financial hardship on hundreds of thousands of people if there's a shut-down. They need to put their arrogance aside for a moment, and realize that the budget has to be fixed. now. $Trillions in debt? And they want to spend more on bull #$%& social programs? Talk about clueless. When you're this far in debt, you can't afford to flush more money down the toilet on controversial programs like NPR, Planned Parenthood, etc.

The paltry few cuts they've agreed to so far, is as if I made $50k a year, spent $90k a year, had $1 million in credit card debt and thought I could fix everything by no longer going out to dinner a few times a month. What a joke.

Your rant would be pretty good if it contained any truth.

What controversial about women health issues? No federal money is used for abortions; that's been the law of the land for quite some time. Why do the Republicans keep bringing it up? This isn't about the budget, it's about ideology.

Both sides are disingenuous but the Republicans are much worse.

I think the next big project might be to reorganise the Guides category by adding appropriate subcategories such as (for example) Mac Hardware Guides, Mac OS X Guides, iPod Guides etc. It's getting quite large as it is, and it might make it easier to find relevant articles.

It shouldn't be too bad, there are only 120 articles in the Guides category, so any changes should be much simpler than what I've done. And also you can also go through the standard categories to find the guide articles now.

I think getting more people editing the rest of the guides and getting people using the guides is the next step, especially from the iPod/iPhone side.

As well as a lot of very short articles there is a lot of good content already there.

The Macintosh SE has a 68000 processor which limits it to the StyleWriter series (I think up to the StyleWriter II works on it). Laser printers are different and to my knowledge all LaserWirters will work on a Mac SE.

THe Mac SE can have up to Mac OS 7.5.5, which includes the LaserWriter 8 driver and other LaserWriter Drivers.

It depends on what ports are available on your LaserWriter. Tell us the model name.

whenever i hear podcast i immediately think of apple, so why is apple shutting down free advertising?

Ever think that Apple might not want you to think of them when you download some of the crap podcasts that would be, and have already become available???

Apple would lose control of something they have been able to, for the most part, control up to now.

Like Janet Jackson, Apple likes control.

Knowing Apple there will be a way to turn it off in the OS if you don't want to use it. Also for the totally paranoid, a mod to remove the hardware from your iPhone will hit the web the week it is on the street.

Also, I bet the hardware will be laid out where removing a pair or surface mount resistors will make it that simple to disable separating the antenna from the semiconductor.

    Why RFID?

    Vending Machines

    Gas Pumps

    Door locks and passage locks

Home security system thing - let's you know who came to your door etc.

    Subway Train Token

    Movie Tickets

    Digital "tickets" for anything.

    Museum audio program guide thingies.

    Micro Payment systems

Demographic plotting of people passing a turnstile

I hope people try to see beyond the "evil Gubment" spy stuff.

Not to mention that the internal Ethernet port could support up to Gigabit speeds while the extEthernet would only support up to 100Mbps (due to USB's limitation of 480mbps).

Thunderbolt will solve this. TB to Gigabit Ethernet adapter will definitely deliver 1Gb/s (800Mb/s due to 8/10b encoding).

The amount of stupidity in this thread is mind-blowing. Don't want people to know where you are? Don't check in. It's so simple.

By default, your friends can check you in to any location - whether you're there or not.

That's where the real privacy concern is coming from.

It's one thing if YOU put your location out to the world, but it's another thing entirely when your friends can do it (and I'm sure many would do that, quite innocently).

What I am saying is - if SJ wants to sell his computer to the sub 20-year-old community, he better get his prices down. Because even though I could work my tail off at work, and earn enough money to buy a mac, a mac still might not be worth it. For example, if apple sold a dual 1.5 GHz 970 in addition to the current line-up for $10,000, it still wouldn't be worth $10,000 for me because that equates to ~1,170 hours of work for me. If I was a extremely well off person, and money wasn't an issue, the computer would be worth the money.

So, basically what I am saying is Apple needs to get down their prices in order to sell their high end systems to people who want them but don't have the highest paycheck.

I once sat on a plane next to an intellectual property lawyer who was commuting to NYC for work from Rochester. As it turned out he had once worked for EK and was now working in the city.

When I conveyed my surprised over how strange it was that Eastman Kodak was lagging behind in digital imaging and still focused on film considering they were responsible for much of the technology behind digital imaging, he basically inferred that EK's leadership mismanaged their patent goldmine.

i bet they had people there with MBA's from good schools running financial what if's and telling management to avoid digital because they will make less money due to not selling the film or anything other than the camera

Living outside of Rochester and working in the city I've have associated with a number of Kodak people (both current and former, there are lots of former). Frankly in this town MBAs have become associated with idiots, that seem to engage in heard mentality.

It isn't that they miscalculated the rise of digital, as miscalculations happen in business, it is the silly decision they made that resulted in the company divesting itself of businesses that had a future. The point is you can miscalculate a bit when it comes to how rapid you core tech will become useless but your planning should recognize that is going to happen and that you need to grow in a different direction. Instead Kodak shrunk itself down around a dying business.

I've not read the patent so I can't say much to that but I do hope they loose and loose big time. I just think the management team needs a big slap in the face.
