You obviously missed the irony of it all (and yes, OSX is around 10 years old now). Windows was never called "1, 2, 3" etc. so there's more irony for OSX which did takes 10 years to get where it is now (i.e that's how long they've been working on OSX; OS9 has NOTHING to do with the length of time they've spent on the current OS, which has little or nothing to do with OS9 technologically other than the similarity in GUI interface (save the overlap in Carbon libraries). OSX is based on NeXTStep, itself based on Unix. It's not based on Mac Classic OS 1-9. But then my ;) should have clued you in. But then Windows haters rarely get such humor, IMO.

You're implying that I said something that you are "correcting" me on. Length of time of OS X development? Show me where I mentioned this before proceeding to "correct me".

The thing I mentioned was the progression of names: OS 9 then OS X. I know the two are vastly different. I know OS X is based on unix. But to say the numbering doesn't show a progression is silly. OS X instead of OS 10 indicates a significant change while preserving the numbering.

I was only discussing the name Windows 7. Everyone with an answer believes they know. I don't know so I will not critique the individual answers. But I find it fascinating that between obvious Windows users there is no consensus. I've seen more than one explanation for the "7".

And finally I am not a Windows "hater". I am a hater of people who care to waste my time telling me why using a Mac is "wrong". I will say that since being away from Windows for the most part for some time now, that I am lost on that OS. It used to be that I could go back and forth with ease. But the subtle changes to Windows have made it less intuitive IMO. And being a non-Windows user I think I am a good judge of whether it is intuitive or not when I try it. Microsoft has been making changes to Office for Mac over the years that I find strange. Labeling axis on a graph in excel for instance is less intuitive than it used to be. But recently I had to use excel on a Windows machine and I have to say it was very strange how it has been organized. The changes to Office for Mac OS are nothing compared to the changes I have seen to Office for Windows OS.

Looking at those rumors they got wrong was quite disappointing. I really would love for them to come out with it before Christmas, but if not, I guess I can leave the tree up til MFSF and hold out hope.

Everyone is making comments that suggest that the Gizmodo guys are professionals and have broken some code of ethics.
They were there as professionals at a professional event, and as said, given press passes. They presented themselves as professionals, and wouldn't have gotten in for free and to the presentations had they not. Even worse, they bring the rest of the community down with them. Some bloggers actually fight hard to try and be taken seriously. Stuff like this just makes it harder for them. And since they're making money by covering this, they may get a small bump in the short term, but it could hurt them down the line when companies decide they aren't worth doing business with.

    Statement from the CEA (http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9849168-7.html?tag=nefd.only):

We have been informed of inappropriate behavior on the show floor by a credentialed media attendee from the Web site Gizmodo, owned by Gawker Media. Specifically, the Gizmodo staffer interfered with the exhibitor booth operations of numerous companies, including disrupting at least one press event. The Gizmodo staffer violated the terms of CES media credentials and caused harm to CES exhibitors. This Gizmodo staffer has been identified and will be barred from attending any future CES events. Additional sanctions against Gizmodo and Gawker Media are under discussion.
It's not quite as funny when there are consequences.

Yeah. I love the products but I loathe the man. Then again I'm just a regular user and not one of those scary MacDroids. You know, the ones with the blank stare, the ones that repeat mantras about Windows viruses and the dreaded blue screen of death... some even believe Windows gives you AIDS. They're kind of like scientologists or Jehova's Witnesses. But you gotta keep in mind those were the ones he was addressing, as always. Hence the smugness. The Keynote is his church and he is their god. Notice the constant applause and cheering over stuff like, oh, some new button or menu item. Mac will always be my second platform because these people just scare the poop out of me.

Whatever you are attempting to sell is failing the 'smell' test (if you follow me). You do not know the man I am fairly certain. I am always suspicious about how well screwed on people are, who see others as mindless droids and cannot keep their bowel movements under control.

If you think that John Siracusa (or citations thereto) is a troll, then your ignorance is breathtaking. (The absence of your actually addressing the issue at hand in lieu of ad hominem attacks is conspicuous and dubious.)

Did I miss something? I was talking about Eidorian. And I don't care if he's secretly Steve Jobs. A troll is a troll.

If I hung around on a Nokia-centric site and posted CONSTANTLY about Nokia sucking nowadays and made negative posts on virtually every single article people would label me a troll because that's what I'd be.

You can point out an error and give solution

The goal of the forum is not to give out solutions, sorry. If that is what you are looking for, you're looking for it in the wrong places. We're here to help you figure out how to find the solution yourself (either by pointing out appropriate documentation or by giving hints).

or you can tell that person to quit what he's doing because he has no idea. It's a lot easier to say, go read Apples documentation than to point out an error and explain it yourself.

No one told you to quit and pointing out the documentation often times is better than someone trying to explain it. The documentation will be correct, and why type out an explanation to something Apple already documentation (ie, explained) in the proper terms ?

Now if there's something in the documentation you need help clarifying, please feel free to ask questions about the documentation.

So I'm told, but A) 3G phones are backwards compatible with old GSM networks. Mine switches between 3G/regular GSM constantly when I'm at home, as I live very close to a base station but far from the nearest 3G mast. Hence they should just stick a 3G 'sleeper cell' in there for (near) future use... and B) I respect that Apple is an American company, but they peddle their stuff all across the globe. Every little itty bitty iPod has 21 languages built in. When Apple Store closes down for maintenance it happens simultaneously all across the globe, and when it pops back online again the new products are available in all countries. Never in Apple's history have I seen them do something as US-centric as this - heck, we're not getting it until 2008! Strange, pretty damn alienating, and it had better not become a habit.
Apple's iPhone launch is no different from any other phone launch -- it appears to be going world region by world region. Europeans get all of the awesome new Nokia and Sony Erricson phones months/years before the US (assuming they make it here at all), so you're wasting your breath by complaining that the iPhone is coming to the US first to this American. I didn't find it fun getting (or paying for) the latest Windows Mobile device from eBay UK or Expansys because neither of the two GSM carriers here wanted it.

Since the quad-band EDGE iPhone Apple announced Tuesday would work quite well 'as is' on your overseas GSM network, I'd imagine that the delay to 2008 would be so that they COULD put in 3G for you. Properly. Not some crazy idea about a super secret 3G chip to be enabled later. Especially since your 3G runs on entirely different frequencies than the US.

or did i miss the step where you could record tv shows and put movies on it from your dvds ?
Not to threadjack this into an Apple TV thread, but the Apple TV appears to stream/store anything that can be played from in iTunes, and there have been ways to get your own TV shows and DVDs into iTunes for awhile now.

Make sure to post back when you figure out a way to do that lol

Figuring (http://www.jr.com/optoma/pe/OTM_PK201/) it out isn't a question, just whether I'd want to be that obnoxious. And blow a couple hundred for the privilege. :p

I know I'm the minority around here when I say this, but I don't own an iPod. Yeah, it's true... I personally don't care for the MP3 format and the lesser quality offerings of iTunes. If it isn't at least CD quality, uncompressed, I don't want it. And yes, I can hear the difference on my sound system which is a separate setup from my home theatre.

I have one word for you Lossless.

I think it would just be an additional code in the x86 part of the UB. Correct me if I'm wrong...

    Probably you are wrong.

The firmware would have to be written to work with the net hardware, but AMD chips are i86 compatible processors with the same 64 bit extensions that Intel use (Intel had to suck it up and use the same 64 bit extensions as AMD when the universe + dog rejected their take on 64-bit processing).

No, not really. I can only speak for myself, but I would have said "Hey, you forgot to charge my card." Kinda seems obvious.

When my ipod got stolen I tried the same thing with Apple. My ipod is registered in the system, but they too would not give me the ip address of anyone using my ipod. You would have better luck just knocking on the door when you see the tv on and the xbox connected to xbox live.

Not overly excited about the keynote.

Yes, which is why the $20 iPod touch apps update is 12.99 over here, instead of 10.20 which is what the exchange rate demands. Even with some made up tax, it's another example of "rip-off Britain".

It's even worse on the continent: EUR 2,268 excl. VAT in Germany which equals $ 3,356 for a standard MBP 17" (US store: $ 2,799)

BTW $ 2,112 excl. VAT for MBA in Europe !!! Ridiculous.

I bought the normal addition a few days back and have just finished the campaign but also played a few rounds of multiplayer and zombies.

IMO it is way better then W@W but not better maybe even worse then MW2.
I think i just prefer modern guns compared to old style weapons.

The campaign is well thought out and has a good story line. Only down side is a couple of glitches i stumbled upon. For example in the level where you drive the gun boat down the river after i got out the sound of the M60(or whatever machine gun is on the boat) stayed on and was way louder then everything else. Even when i died it stayed on. really frustrating.

The top-down zombie mode is pure awesome.

    I'm a gun person ...

I, on the other hand, am very anti-gun.

However, even I got a chuckle out of the bumper that read, Guns kill people, like spoons made Rosie O'Donnell fat.

But then I thought about it ... spoons are eating utensils ... perhaps we should call guns killing utensils.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the once closed iPod+iTunes ecosystem suddenly became open to every music store except the Zune Marketplace? Fairplay would effectively replace PlaysForSure, the only closed DRM would be the Zune's, and every other music player manufacturer would be left with no music store compatibility at all until they slowly die... And the mythic Apple vs Micro$oft war would rage once again.

As others have mentionned, I see 2 negative things with this:

Used to having more? No. I am one of eight kids and my wife is one of ten.
That was directed more at True... But, thanks for the enlightenment.

Don't presume to know my "standards". We have enough space, but doing it all over I'd choose more. I work hard. I make money accordingly. What's money for if not improving the lives of my family? I don't want a big house for no purpose, I'd just like enough to give my children some personal space so they don't have to collide every day.
Good goals. And money is fine to have (and as you say, enrich your family, not just for the sake of having wealth).

Some of these posts are coming across as narrow-minded. If you backed your initial post with these facts, I'd have replied differently.

Purely due to the amount of manufacturers creating Android devices.

Which is the entire problem with Android. And which is why you will never, ever, see any single Android device outsell the iPhone.

Guessing you guys never played Rust a lot in MW2. Talk about getting killed as soon as you spawn. Rust along with Terminal was a perfect knifing map. :D
Yea, Rust was just as bad, same with Shipment in COD4. Those types of small maps are fun, like once every 50 games or so, just to break the flow a little, and run and gun. And I don't really have a problem with Nuketown itself, per se, but when you have totally abysmal spawns, it just sucks. If the spawns were better, my view of many maps would be much more favorable. I'm looking at you Array and Summit
