to be frank, i would wait for the new computer which will have imovie11 bundled. i have no idea what early versions of imovie do to footage on import, but it's probably not nice. If you were using FCP it wouldn't be an issue.

fyi, mpeg4 is h.264 (kind of). h.264 is actually mpeg4 part 10, but the terms are often used interchangeably. Both however, are delivery formats.

I would import as DV since it would be the native tape based format and has less compression.

in terms of the person who talked abotu a large campus, I know the pain, mine is a mile by a mile, and sometimes you need to haul ass from one end to another, the 17incher still doesn't bother me, but I guess that 's also cause i'm used to carrying around a 20lb bag. lol. So yeah I'm used to weight, in fact since the power book I've lessened what else is with me, so in the end the power book, though heavy, has got me carrying less weight

Can someone make rainbow "Don't Tread On Me" flags? I think it would be a brilliant way to show Republican hypocrisy on their calls for smaller government, yet they think government should regulate who and who cannot marry based on, well, nothing.

does it need a video card in it?

i would assume so, though it only needs to be a crappy video card. the problem is that the BIOS or EFI or whatever firmware is running on the motherboard would usually freak out if it couldnt find a video device. i know ive turned on many machines in my building days and usually if they dont have one of the essentials (ram, proc, an input device, a video out device) they just beep and hang.

It would be interesting to find out if Apple had some sort of trademark on the letter 'i' when used with a computer, or communication related product. That might put Cisco in its place, being that the 'i'Mac was introduced on May 6, of 1996.

I know it would be a long shot, but since the US Patent and Trademark Office's site is impossible to search, its just an idea.

    OK, hello all!

I made this iMac switcher ad in After Effects, just before the 24" iMac came out. I should probably update it!

The music is IZ-US by Aphex Twin from the Come to Daddy EP (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=74775601&s=143444).

    Enjoy :)

Looked through the forums for this topic, but no dice. My question:

I'd like to transfer pictures from my CDMA phone (on Sprint; LG Rumor2) via bluetooth to my ipod touch 3rd gen. I've gotten them to recognize each other, but they don't seem to hold connection. The iPod especially fails to connect. I've gotten to the point of the passkey and each device identifying the other, but that's where it ends.

Anyone have any success with this, LG or otherwise?

for the longest while i've been using my g5 tower as my media player connected to my tv. it sorta got the job done, but it takes up a bunch of space, doesn't really handle hd material very well, and osx isn't really an interface designed to be used from the couch.

so i started to wistfully consider the "it only does everything" marketing of the ps3. i don't have a blu ray player or a modern gaming system (last i owned was super nintendo, yeahh!!!), and it sounded like it could also replace the clunky functionality of the g5.

after finally deciding to splurge on one over the holidays, i'm finding that i'm having some buyer's remorse, but i'm not sure if its just because i'm not doing things properly. here are my issues:

-the web experience is *awful* - i don't know how apple can be slammed so much for eliminating flash from their devices when almost every video site i visited on the ps3 was non functional... from vimeo, to an hd-less and horribly low-bitrate version of youtube, to any network sites that would have streaming episodes of their tv shows just showing a black screen where video content would have gone.

-netflix is useless in canada (this is less a ps3 issue but definitely detracts from its value). i knew their selection was limited, and $8 is pretty cheap for all you can watch, but there's not much there i *would* want to watch.

-streaming downloaded content from sources like other computers is terribly limited. i was fortunate enough to have a western digital mybook world that has a build-in media server which works well enough, but from the sounds of things accessing content from a macbook or even the g5 would be a headache and might require paid software.

overall i don't want to slam the ps3 as i'm sure its a great game system and blu ray player, and maybe those will be reason enough to keep it... i had just hoped for more in its media streaming capabilities, and i don't know if i'm overlooking some good work arounds, or if sticking with the g5 for those tasks really is the better solution.

If the stick physically fits, then it won't cause harm.

At best, it'll work great, running the stick out of spec.

At worst, the PC won't boot with the 'wrong' stick in there.

Most likely (all this is assuming a 'wrong' stick,) it will boot, but will boot slower than you want. For example, if it has an 866MHz processor, it might only boot at 650Mhz. (Because, for example, it uses a 133Mhz bus, and you put 100Mhz RAM in, so it would run the processor at only a 100MHz bus, dropping it's speed accordingly.)

Or, with lots of motherboards, the processor speed and RAM speed were independent, so it would run just fine, but the memory would run at the 'lowest common denominator' speed. This is especially true of newer DDR motherboards.
so basically, if the stick fits, and its faster than the memory the computer takes, it will clock down. I dont think that will be the case, the memory is older. I am just going to throw it in. I just dont want to ruin the computer, still need it for school.

Try starting in "safe" mode by holding down the shift key on startup. Then, you should be able to install the update to 10.1.5.

I'm curious as to what model iMac that is. 10.1 is very old, and really was the first useable version of OS-X. You should try and upgrade to a bare minimum of 10.2 (Jaguar), but the latest version that will run on your model would probable be best.

10.3 (Panther) would be the lowest I would recommend; 10.4 (Tiger) even better (I'm making a guess your model is below the minimum spec to run Leopard, 10.5.).

I will but if it's just replacement warranty, for the cost, I wouldn't be *too* bothered if it wasn't covered. I'll be backing everything up anyway.

    Good point though.

Thanks.Another warranty related point. Seagate offers 5 year warranties, Hitachi offers 3 years. What do the others offer for retail drives?

Some companies (or models of drives) are down to a one year warranty for the retail packaged drive. That tells me they don't expect them to last to 3 years with any decent amount of regularity.

Buy a drive that the manufacturer is willing to give the longer retail warranty. The OEM drives will be the same quality but may have shorter warranties. Also a lot of times you have to go through the correct OEM to get warranty service on an OEM drive.

again if you actaully have read the past articles you wont have to this is just a bonus type of deal good lord.

So you pay some money to Sony and you get access to bonus things? That sounds an awful lot like paying for a service.

Try a Thinkpad T-series. Best-built for the money, with user-replaceable parts (try finding that on most machines today), and a keyboard that puts all others to shame.

Agreed. In fact, IBM/Lenovo and Apple have historically been the only companies that could build a laptop that survive a year or more in my loving care xD

Looking back, every Apple laptop I've owned since my PB1400, barring one of the two 12" AlBooks that just got dropped one too many times still works. The same can be said of my T20, T30, and the cheap Lenovo N200 I bought when I thought I wouldn't be able to afford the MacBook I'm using now.

In the same time, I've killed Dells, Sonys, various MSI and Mitac machines badged as unheardof manufacturers, so YMMV, but I'll stick to Apple and Lenovo. Sonys tend to feel just as flimsy as all the others IMHO, but maybe I've only had the misfortune to meet their lower end machines.
