Hey there, I had a question about external hard drives. I have a USB external drive hooked up to my Mac mini that is mainly used to playing media through Plex. It plays back any files just fine directly from the hard drive, but what is kind of annoying is waiting for the initial boot up time that the hard drive has to go through after it isn't used for a little while. Is there a way to tell that USB hard drive to never go into that "sleep" mode or whatever it does? I unchecked checked the box in my system preferences under Energy Saver that says to put the hard drives to sleep when possible, but I guess this doesn't apply to external hard drives. I just need something to ping it every so often so it never shuts off. Would a FireWire 800 hard drive do the same thing?

Guys - what do you think the expected turnout is for the iPhone 4 launch? I showed up for both the 3G and 3GS and was underwhelmed by the lack of line (that's a good thing!) but with all the attention the iPhone 4 is getting, you'd think there is going to be a lot of attention. I am planning on showing up around 4 or 5 am with plenty of coffee, wifi hotspot (to share :D) and some entertainment. Anyone else with me?

Thank you :)
It's fun to do. I've never made a .gif until this contest. i used CS3 in the video & film -workspace. Just a bunch of layers converted to frames.

Anyone know if the remote optical drive function is purely limited to program installs or does it work like a full fleged networked drive?

Hi all,
I'm having a strange issue getting my Apple Wireless Keyboard to run on my new HTPC under Windows 7 (64 bit). I can get Windows' bluetooth manager to detect the keyboard, and I can input the pairing code, following which Windows seems to install a bunch of drivers, but then I get no response from the keyboard at all.
The thing I find strange is that the keyboard works when I punch in the code numbers, but never before or after.
I also have a Magic Mouse which works perfectly.
Once paired and installed, the keyboard is displayed in Windows' driver manager as a "Bluetooth Peripheral Device", so I'm wondering if the issue is that Windows isn't recognising the device as a keyboard.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks heaps, in advance.

You will have the 3G model then, what you want to do is upgrade to 4.1 then jailbreak that using "limera1n or greenpois0n" there are many instructional websites, or just ask back here for help.
But 4.1 is your best option
But of course, to upgrade to 4.1, you would need to have your SHSH blobs saved... Only 4.2.1 would not require blobs, and no general untethered jailbreak for it is out yet...

Yes. Parallels allows you to use the Bootcamp partition as a virtual machine. Create a new VM, and you will see an option to use Bootcamp as the VM disk. I believe it's described fairly well in the Parallels documentation.
The only caveat is you can't suspend, as you would a standard VM (with disk virtualized too).
When you restart your Bootcamp install natively, it will configure itself to use native hardware. When started through Parallels, it will configure itself using virtualized h/w. Also, the first time you start Bootcamp Windows through Parallels, it will automatically install drivers that Parallels needs.

It's 5 if you're coming. I'll be getting there around 4:30 if traffic isn't bad. I'll make up a little sign that says MacRumors on it. I'm wearing my 5th Ave shirt with a long sleave underneath it.

Are there any other options besides a $99 software? That's a little pricey for my budget.

It's a borderline call. Adding a forum is always a compromise between differentiating different types of threads or contributing to "forum bloat", the tendency for the number of forums to continually increase. The iPad forum gets about 22% more activity than the iPod touch forum, and the iPhone forum overshadows them both (the percentages could changer over time). At some point the number of iPod touch help threads might be worth yet another forum. Right now there isn't a huge volume of iPod touch threads. More than a week's active threads are typically on the first or second forum page, not buried and pushed out of sight as a help thread in the main iPhone forum might soon be.

I don't have any lag when I drag any windows. Report as a bug and *fingers crossed* it will get fixed next release if Apple gets enough reports to investigate it.
thanks for the reply :)
Since then (i have a feeling it may have been indexing and slowing down somehow? :S) it has become normal speed :D Despite a bug i just found, every things great. How do you officially report a bug? I just got my Dev acc. this month. Thanks :D

Sweet. I've had some Apple related cakes of my own, made by my sister:
280784
280785
BTW, that's a real CD, just shoved in there to make it look like the drive on a Mac Mini.
Not Apple related, but I have to show off my most recent birthday cake she made as well:

Found two, I can do them for $5 shipped (let me know if you feel that is unreasonable).
For the record I also have the LCD latch mechanism and two hinges for sale.

Hey guys, I'm not sure exactly what time I'll be there. I'm coming in from Worcester (school) and am having dinner at my grandparents' house in Pawtucket. This means I'll either go eat at 5 and then go to the mall (ie arrive right around 6) or get to the mall earlier and have a late dinner.
How should we try to find each other? Wear leopard-print shirts? lol, God no... :p

For your text ( #membershipcontent ), remove the "position: relative" and/or "left: 285px"
Think of relative positioning as a "nudge" -- the browser does most of the rendering and then moves any elements relatively positioned by the number of pixels you tell it. In your case, 285px on the left which bumps it to the right.
HTH,
~ Jeremy
Thats great solved my problem
thanks
